 High Resolution Imaging

Crytur, LtD. has developed excellent imaging screens based on YAG:Ce and LuAG:Ce materials. The advantage of the very thin screens is a high spatial resolution in imaging applications. The thickness of the screens is down to 5 micrometers.

The main important properties of YAG:Ce and LuAG:Ce materials are high density, fast decay time, chemical, mechanical and temperature resistance. The wavelength of YAG:Ce and LuAG:Ce scintillation emission is ideal for photodiode and avalanche photodiode readout.

The screens are designed to be used for electron, X-Ray or UV (Ultra Violet light) imaging systems. They can be equiped with optional Al, ITO or C (Aluminum, Indium Tin Oxide or Carbon) conductive and reflection coatings on entrance side. Optional AR coating can be made on output side.

The optimal thickness of the screen is a compromise between high detection efficiency and high resolution. A thin screen on a precise optical substrate, imaged by an optical system with a highly sensitive CCD detector, gives resolution about 1 micron for X-ray radiation.

 Imaging Screens On Optical Substrates

The high resolution imaging screen forms a basic part of the high-resolution imaging system. Crytur has developed very thin imaging screens based on YAG:Ce or LuAG:Ce single crystal scintillation detectors.

A high resolution imaging system can be built up on the base of the imaging screen on an optical substrate. Together with an optical system and a CCD camera one can achieve resolution down to 1 micron in X-Ray or about 2 nanometers in electron microscopy.

Crytur has developed a high resolution X-ray camera based on this fenomena. See the X-ray camera section.

 Imaging Screens On Fibre Optics

Imaging screens based on YAG:Ce and LuAG:Ce can be supplied bonded on FOP, and also coupled with CCD.

The resolution of X-ray images obtained with this imaging system is about 20 microns. On request, we are also able to bond the imaging screen onto fiber optics and CCD supplied by the customer.

Critical parameters of the high resolution imaging system

  • Minimal thickness of the plate.
  • Excellent parallelism of faces.
  • High optical quality.
  • Space homogeneity of luminescence.
  • Optical coatings.

We are ready to design and supply a complete imaging systems to suit your needs.

 Very thin freestanding screens

Crytur Ltd. has newly developed and supplies very thin YAG:Ce screens of the 10 mm diameter and thickness of 0.030 mm. These screens are freestanding, e.g. they are not glued to any base (i.e. glass or FOP). Screens can also be made in larger diameters; however, this limits the available thickness to as much as 0.050 mm. The supporting frame is made of an Al2O3-based ceramics, and it is typically 2 mm wide and 2 mm high. Al2O3, carbon or ITO conductive coatings and optional AR coating can be made on the request.
